What is coaching?

For many of us, no matter where we are in life there is a desire for more – more money, more time, a higher level of success, better relationships, a deeper feeling of our purpose in life, and so on. It is human nature to want to attain more, become more, be more, but we all struggle with how to meet those aspirations. Coaching is an enormously powerful, collaborative relationship designed to support you in achieving your personal and professional goals – to help you meet your need for more. Coaching creates an environment where you focus your daily actions on the most important issues in your life, breaking down barriers to success and enhancing personal performance.

Like an athletic coach, a performance coach’s role is to challenge you to be better tomorrow than you are today, to provide you with the expertise needed to reach your goals, and to hold you accountable for living up to your full potential. Serious athletes depend on a coach to maximize their success in whatever sport they engage in; likewise, a performance coach can help you maximize your success, no matter what activity you choose to undertake or what challenges you’re facing.

Coaching is not psychotherapy – the focus is not on analyzing the past or evaluating human behavior. Instead, you and your coach will work together to move forward into a compelling future. Imagine a relationship with someone who is as committed to your dreams as you are, who stays focused on your big picture even when you can’t, who always tells you the truth about your strengths and weaknesses from an unbiased perspective – someone who celebrates your victories and helps you learn from your setbacks. That someone is your coach.

How does coaching work?

Coaches use highly developed communication, relationship, and intuition skills to help you set and achieve goals or convert ideas to reality. Various tools, tailored to your specific situation, assist in creating results. These tools may include compelling questions, assessments, exercises, learning resources, and fieldwork. With the support and structure your coach provides, you will be capable of accomplishing more and at a faster pace than if you attempted to act alone. Coaches often focus their practice on clients with similar interests and needs. A transition coach, for example, specializes in creating an environment for change, and providing a focused approach for new ideas and challenges. Clients of transition coaches are typically prepared to make a substantial leap in personal development to create positive change. These clients may be facing a significant personal or professional challenge, experiencing career dissatisfaction, or looking for focus in the midst of chaos.

How do I get the most from the coaching relationship?

Coaching is most effective when both coach and client are working together towards a clear goal. Together you will create a strong foundation at the beginning by establishing a set of compelling goals, getting a clear picture of success, and co-creating an approach. Your coach will create a safe and totally confidential environment for you to take risks and explore new ideas – a place where you can breathe, vent your frustrations, learn from your failures and celebrate your successes. Your coach will have the courage to deal with you truthfully, in a direct and non-judgmental way, and in return will expect candid and honest communication from you.

Preparing for your call will ensure that you get the most from it. The focus of each call is determined by you. You will complete a call strategy form prior to each session. There is often "fieldwork", where you are given a tool, new perspective or a challenge to work on between calls. This creates momentum and change.
